Costa Rica offers a perfect mix of allure and activities that makes it one of Central America's most consistently satisfying destinations. Whether you're seeking active adventure — zip-lining through cloud forests, white-water rafting, surfing Pacific breaks — or simply want to sit on a white-sand beach with warm water at your feet, Costa Rica accommodates both within the same trip.

Sandy Beaches & Clear Waters

Costa Rica's Pacific coastline — from Guanacaste's Playa Hermosa in the north to the beaches of the Central Pacific zone — has warm, calm water year-round and the golden sunsets the country is famous for. Playa Ventanas, south of Jacó, allows visitors to swim in crystal-clear water or explore its two beachside sea caves at low tide — one of the more unexpected coastal experiences in the region.

Costa Rica's Pacific beaches range from surf breaks to sheltered coves — the right beach depends on your itinerary and the time of year.

Dense Rainforest and Diverse Wildlife

Over a quarter of Costa Rica's territory is protected rainforest. Manuel Antonio National Park combines beach access with some of the best wildlife viewing in the country — white-faced capuchin monkeys, sloths, scarlet macaws, and agouti are regular sightings. Arenal Volcano in the northern lowlands offers geothermally heated hot springs and a base for adventure sports. Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast is accessible only by boat or small plane, and its jungle canals are as close to the Amazon experience as you'll find in Central America.

Fresh Costa Rican Cuisine

Costa Rican food is honest, fresh, and deceptively satisfying. The national dish — Gallo pinto, seasoned rice and beans cooked together with spices — appears at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is delicious at any time of the day. Fresh tropical fruit, ceviche from the morning's catch, and locally-grown coffee from the Tarrazú and Naranjo regions round out a food culture that rewards curiosity.

Planning Your Costa Rica Journey

The dry season (December–April) is peak season and most reliable for beach and outdoor activities. The green season (May–November) brings lower prices, fewer visitors, and the extraordinary spectacle of leatherback sea turtles nesting on the Caribbean coast.
